Available PostScript Memory

Can anybody tell me how to correctly set "Available
PostScript Memory"? The default setting for the driver is
611 KB. My HP printer's PostScript Configuration Page
shows "Global VM (Max): 17.5 MB" and "Local VM (Max):
16.8MB"

I've seen instructions to set available PostScript Memory
correctly, but how do you determine what's correct?
