Autotext and Numbering

If I use the Numbering or Bullets in word my Autotext when inserted into a
template document will freeze and lock-up the computer. If I manually create
the numbering the autotext works fine!

Any reason for this or a solution?

I'm not clear exactly what you are trying to do here, but you will almost
certainly fare better if you set up bullets and numbering using styles. For
instance, if you want AutoText of a bulleted item, use List Bullet style
(modify it to give you the exact formatting you want if the default doesn't
suit).

For more information see Shauna Kelly's site:

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html, for instance.

Margaret,

What I was asking was is there a Problem with Word 2000 if you use the built
in Bullets and Numbering on the toolbar when using Auto text. If I use the
tool bar items some auto text will lock up the computer. But If I manually
create the numbering the same way, the auto text works.

Do you know of any problems with Word 2000 and Auto Text related to bullets
and numbering?

I don't know of any specific problem with AutoText, but bullets and
numbering from the toolbar is not very stable and is best avoided for
anything other than simple documents you edit and print from a single
computer - hence the advice.

I still don't understand from your description the order of work that locks
the computer, but I assume you are trying to store the numbered or bulleted
item as AutoText. Word 2000 prior to SR-1 had some issues with the number of
list templates (numbering schemes) building up in documents, so it is
possible you are hitting those limits. If that is happening in Normal.dot
(where your AutoTexts are stored) you may need to recreate Normal.dot - see
the instructions for creating a new Normal.dot in

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm

The problem has nothing to do with AutoText and everything to do with using
the toolbar buttons for bullets and numbering. It is unstable for long or
heavily edited documents! They work for getting something out quickly that
won't be expanded, copied, or heavily edited.

bullets see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html, the
subject is related.)

Thanks to you for all the inforamation. I was going crazy trying to figure
out why my auto text was crashing in a template but worked fine in documents
and when done manually.

We are now going through and removing all Toolbar Numbering from the 140
Auto Texts we have.
