As Gord said, it is the upper case sigma. Upper case sigma is the summation
symbol in maths. Lower case Epsilon is normally used to denote the error
portion in a calculation such as regression.
If you are using 2007, you can choose Insert, Symbol and in the Arial Font
set find and click on the Sigma sign you will see a description of it at the
bottom left of the dialog box "Greek Capital Letter Sigma". If you click on
the capital E in the area of greek letters you will see its description.
About 20 characters further along is the lower case e with an accent.
