Does anyone know how to create an autorun.inf file that does nothing
when a cd is inserted under Windows XP? I'd prefer not to run a
silent program - I was hoping to find something built in to the
autorun.inf design to accomplish this.

I'm trying to suppress bringing up Explorer or asking the user what he
wants to do with the inserted cd.

Just don't make one!
That way there will be no action to do.
Usually that pop-windows appears when u insert a special cd like a
movie, video, pictures, blank, etc. but not so for cd with programs that do
not have an autorun.inf wich is the file that actually tells windows to do
something.

You see windows search this file, if found it will run the set of
commands/orders that it contains. If it is not found it just left the cd
alone!

Hope this helps.

The problem is that if there is no autorun.inf file present, xp (by
default) tries to figure out what to do with it. It brings up a file
requestor that runs through all the files looking for something to run
(I have 20,000 files on the CD so it takes a long time), and then asks
the user what they want to do with the cd. This is all fine and dandy
if you're trying to install software, but when you're simply loading a
data cd that is being used by a program - you don't want the user to
see any of that.

I've included an empty autorun.inf file, and that simply brings up the
CD root folder in My Computer - which I don't want either.

Doug Knox - thanks for your posts, but I need a solution that will
work on other people's machines without asking them to tweak their
settings. I don't want them to have to disable anything to run our
software.
