Automatically Update Document Styles

I'm trying to use this feature in Word XP but it seems to keep unchecking
itself even though I've saved the file. I tried testing it using Word 2000 as
detailed below but it had no problems.

Can anyone shed any light on why this is occuring?

I did the following in both Word XP and Word 2000

1. Create a Word DOT file named NewStyle.dot save it in the same folder as
Normal.dot.
2. Add a style named NewStyle to NewStyle.dot and save it.
3. Create a Word RTF document named TestDoc.rtf and save it somewhere.
4. Open TestDoc.rtf, go to Tools > Templates and Add-ins and attach
NewStyle.dot to it. Also select the "Automatically update" check box.
5. Close and save TestDoc.rtf.
6. Open the Word2000 version of TestDoc.rtf in Word 2000. The "Automatically
update" check box is still selected.
7. Open the Word XP version of TestDoc.rtf in Word XP. The "Automatically
update" check box is cleared.

Apparently, there is something different about Word XP that will not leave
the check box selected in this instance. In fact, I can't figure out a way
to cause Word to leave the check box selected no matter what I do, unless
the attached template is Normal. If I attach to any other template, no
matter where I put it, Word clears the check box when I open the rtf
document for edit later.

Guesses:

Put a para (blank or non) of type NewStyle in the content of the
document. It also may have something to do with the new XP+ formatting
tracking etc.
