automatically number Word documents

Hi

I'd be obliged if anyone knew how I could automatically
number documents in Word (not pages or paragraphs), ie, I
want to set up a filing system so have a template of a
report and then make copies of this report as necessary
during the year quarters but have it as each time I open a
new report a number is updated, ie, Doc 01, Doc 02, 03 04
etc.

Thanks for any help as I can't find out how to do this.
Thought it might be inserting fields. Cheers
