automatically number items on forms

Hello,

I know on reports we can use the running sum functionalities of text boxes
to display item numbers.
I tried to do the same on a form that also contain multiple records, I
wanted number 1, 2, 3...to appear in front of each record withoutactually
adding a field in the table containing 1, 2, 3 for individual records.
