Automatically change/copy text to mirror another entry

I write questionaires with skip patterns, ie, "if you are male, skip to
question 24." When revising questionaires (adding & deleting questions) the
number sequense changes (ie, question 24 now becomes question 26). I need the
skip directions to change automatically to say, "skip to question 26" as the
question numbers change due to revisions. Excel makes it easy to reference
another cell. Can you do this in word?
 
Insert | Reference | Cross-reference to "Paragraph number" of "Numbered
item."
