Hi,

I have a couple of users reporting that they set their
workbooks to do automatic calculations (under tools -
options - calc. tab) and that every so often they will
close an re-open the workbook and it will have switched
from Automatic to Manual. If you have any ideas on why
this switches or how to make it stick on auto calc. vs
manual calc please let me know. Troublehsooting details
below, thanks.

- User account is local admin on machine
- Have done latest office and windows updates
- Worksheets are large, few MB
- Multiple users report this issue starting only a few
weeks ago

Jeff,

I had this same problem many years ago, and it frustrated the hell out of
me.

Some info I got from Microsoft clarified the situation.

It seems that "Calculation - Automatic/Manual" is a global sticky setting.

MS Excel uses the setting from the first wookbook opened, and uses that
setting on all subsequently opened workbooks.
If you don't save the subsequent workbooks, their Calculation status remains
unchanged.

If the first workbook you open is "Calculation - Manual", then opening any
other workbooks won't change the setting EVEN if they were originally saved
as "Calculation - Automatic". If you save those other workbooks, they take
the new setting.

Alternatively, if the first workbook you open is "Calculation - Automatic",
then opening any other workbooks won't change the setting EVEN if they were
originally saved as "Calculation - Manual". If you save those other
workbooks, they take the new setting.

I did a little test with a saved Workbook of each type, and Excel operated
exactly as described above.

Hope this helps,

regards,

JohnI

This *is* the rule:
The first WB open sets the calc mode.
The XL session, "per se", has *nothing* to do with the calc mode.
Closing *all* WBs wipes the slate clean.
The calc mode on the next (first) WB thereafter sets the mode anew,
*UNTIL*, all WBs are closed again!

So, all you have to do, is try and keep track of your WBs, so that you can
open the correct one first, or else close those that you don't want to set
the mode.
