I'm trying to set up a bookmark within a word document, that is referenced
in the footer. I have created the bookmark, and the reference, however if I
update the source text (within the bookmark limits) the reference doesn't
change in the footer, unless I go into the footer and manualling update the
reference.
If I go into Edit --> Links, the "automatic update" tick box is greyed out.
How do I get the reference to automatically change whenever the source is
updated ?

On the Print tab of the Tools>Options dialog box, make
sure that "Update fields" is selected. Does that help?

An additional comment: Using bookmarks and references to
them may not be the best way to repeat information on each
page. If you are using that procedure to insert, say, the
current heading on each page (which greatly improves
navigation in a printed document!), there is another, much
easier, method you can use, namely the STYLEREF field.
