Hi

One of our custumers wants to use automatic updates on our XP embedded system. A stupid wish in my opinon, because the system is running on a productional machine

1) Is there a way to support "Automaic Updates" even under XP embedded

2) What arguments can be given to the customer to change their opinon

1. Check if you have included "Desktop QFE Support" component in your
productional machine.

If yes, you can connect to MS update page to download the patch.

However, it may cause errors. If the customer download the patch to fix
the components not installed.

2. Try to use "Device Update Agent" by yourself.

As far as I know the only way to update the XPE runtime is
with DUA. You can automate this process by putting the
packages out on a remote server for your clients to pull
down using DUA. Creating the packages for the download is
a little time consuming, but it works. I have heard
thought that Microsoft is going to make it so you can run
the QFE update on the XPE runtime without having to create
a Device Upate Package. I don't know how close they are
on releasing this info, but this will make it much easier
on the people that support XPE runtimes.

Hi Mr. Chen

MS announced QFE 824706 that can support desktop QFE (for
XP Home/Pro) with XP Embedded Run-time. But I cant find
that neither in my component database nor on the internet.

I have noticed that there are components in the component database for using the windows update service both through the web page and the Help and Support Center. Actually in the sales pitch from Microsoft it advertises that you can use auto-update with XPe

The easiest way to deter the customer is to tell them that due to the fact that you have no control over what microsoft does to thier computer you will no longer be able to warranty the item. This has prevented things like this from becoming a problem for me in the past.

I don't know about going that route with the customer. I
would explain to him/her that adding Auto-Update would
increase the size of the runtime image. If the customer
wants all of the functionality of XP Pro then they should
go with XP Pro. The whole idea of Embedded is to shrink
the size of the image by only adding what functionality is
needed for whatever task you need to perform. This would
be the angle I would take with the customer.

Other angle with customer would be that this feature is not supported, and
that it will not work in many cases.

Hi

Thanks for your input guys

The customer uses at the time active directory in a DUA fashion. As I saw, this works well (Without EWF). They only miss the "Automatic updates". I had to tell them that this feature is simply not supported at the time. Additionaly I had to talk to them, because changing the system of a running machine shouldn't be made without serious testing

Nevertheless all the QFEs are tempting..
