My wife's Toshiba Satellite failed to sucessfully install the Security
Update foe Windows XP (KB917422). I have tried several times to install this
but alway obtain this same message. Any suggestions?

On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed
update (red mark) and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the
alternative, do a search for the error code.

If you need to post back, post in the WU Newsgroup
Windows Update newsgroup:

KB917422 is a Security Update for Windows XP and as such should be downloaded
to your pc. Check in Control Panel to see if this update has been saved in
your Add or Remove Programs. Or check your Windows Update history and see if
maybe its already been installed on an earlier date.
When some of these updates are downloaded, they either complete by saying
update complete, or you must restart your computer to finish the download.
Was this update manually done, or did you let Windows automatically do the
update for you?
A lot of times Automatic Updates doesn't restart the pc and your next start
of Windows screws up.
Get into a habit of doing the updates manually one at a time and in order of
the numbers on the updates ie KB917422 after KB917421 etc. Also its a good
idea after a successful download to restart your computer. Sure, this takes a
whole lot longer, but doing it this way gives you a better than 98 percent
chance of a successful update.
You can also get help and support from http:\\support.microsoft.com
I do all of my updates one at a time and restart each one, and I don't have
any failures. I have over a hundred updates on my xp sp2 and each one loaded
normally. Automatic updates are there, you can trust them or do them
yourself. My preference is manual updates.

The error was nine. Error ID Ten T. (ID10T) :-). It would not show up as a
successful install until I restarted the PC. Sorry for crying wolf.

I have moments like that myself !
