Automatic updates causes error

After doing an automatic updates on my pIII running winXPpro I rebooted the
computer. After the reboot "Windows Explorer", "IExplorer", "My Computer",
"Control Panel", etc stopped working. I was going to do a System Restore but
can't run it because I can't open control panel . I tried safe mode and have
the same problem there. Does any one have any ideas on what happened and how
I can get the "automatic updates" to work properly?"

System Restore can be accessed via Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools.
