Is it possible for a user to have updates from Windowsupdate installed
without the user being administrator or a member of the administrators
group?

Since XP is based on the NT OS, the answer is NO. Only
administrators can install and deinstall programs and this
includes updates.

I posted this same question yesterday and got the following answer. The
file from Kelly's site worked fine but be sure you verify the files as
instructed below.

Hi

First, verify that the files Ole32.dll, Rpcrt4.dll and Rpcss.exe in your
System32 folder is corresponding with the values here for your OS to
check that the fix is really installed (be sure to look at the correct OS
version section):

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=823980

If they do, the patch is installed, but stupid enough, Windows Update looks
for
the existence of a registry key that sometimes is missing to define the
update
as installed :(

At Kelly's site, you can download a VBScript file that corrects this (only
run
it if the file versions corresponded with the KB article above):

Prevent Prompting for Hotfix KB823980 (Line 266)

'Hotfix KB823980, after you have already installed it.

Does this also apply to automatic updates?
