Automatic Update Tools for My Software

Can someone recommend one or more packages that can perform automatic
updates of my software on the embedded system?

I need something just like Norton Live Update that can check for and
install updates whenever the unit is connected to the network and at
programmed intervals of time, without human intervention. Having the
client side register before update would be useful, as well as support
for security in updating (preventing bogus updates).

I know nothing about the detailed mechanics of installing updates, and
I don't want to write the code if I can find a good off-the-shelf
solution that will run on an embedded system.
