Stealing from another post - with no response!:

Until a few months ago, I received an icon in the system tray to notify me
that there were updates available for automatic download. This has
entirely stopped. Unless I go to Windows Update website I am unable to
obtain
updates. The proper box is checked in my System file.

Each time I do go to the site, I find no critical updates that are needed.
Is this why?

It have been at least a month since the last automatic update. I'm sure
Microsoft has added some that are required.

You are correct, no critical updates, no automatic download.

The Automatic Updates feature automatically delivers to your computer the
"critical updates" that are available on the Windows Update Web site.

This feature is designed to check for updates every 24 hours. If updates are
not
available, this feature is reset, and then it checks again in 24 hours for
any
new updates after the Internet connection is established. If a download
operation is interrupted, this feature resumes at a later time when the
Internet
connection is re-established.
