Maybe someone from MS can comment on why the *&^%& they think that 11.4
MB of updated nVidia drivers is a 'must have' critical update, to the
point where they attempted to shove it down the wire at one of my
machines?

On the 'manual update' site it's correctly listed as a driver update,
and I've ignored it (along with the 'recommended DX9, and a dozen sundry
other things), so why/who decided to pump it out automatically?

Oh, and the install failed, and it screwed up the system royally in the
process (safe mode time).

"They" are aware of what they did, but IMHO the whole "Hardware Drivers"
update concept is flawed.
Every Sound and Video card manufacturer has specific ways to "update"
drivers and non of them recommend having applications running while updating
(like the auto download/install "feature of MS updates.)

Tiz (sadly) true. And nVidia graphics drivers are the =touchiest= damn
update in the whole pack, depending on where you start from (whether you
already have nView, and sundry junk installed). The only 'safe' way I've
found is to revert to standard VGA, uninstall nVidia completely, and
then install the new version (that has not failed =yet=). Whatever
WinUpdate tried to do, it definitely didn't work the first time. 8<,
