Automatic Update Links check disabled??

Whichever file I open, or create in Word 2003, and use
cross-reference links, I cannot change the Manual/Automatic
Updates checkbox (they're disabled) in the Edit > Links box.

Why does this happen?

You've asked this in numerous groups, and received at least
one answer. The answer is that not all link types support the
option to automatically update. Actually, only OLE Links (LINK
fields) do.

The option is only available in the Edit/Links dialog box if
the type of link supports automatic updating. Cross references
(REF fields) do not.

I have only posted in TWO locations, and the second one IS
EXACLTY the same. I only posted here the second time
because it then I thought that I posted in the the wrong
location.
