Automatic update Icon malfunctioning

Hi,
Icon is telling me that automatic updates are in off position and asks me to
change to on. Then says can't change there... but go to Control panel>
System>Automatic updates... and allow there. It appears that it is already
checked and I press OK but... icon later keeps telling me that automatic
updates are Off. This makes no sense.
P.S. First time on here and read some posts saying perhaps automatic update
status is not desirable anyway. Confused.... as it sounds like something
desirable and necessary if warnings are to be believed.
Help much appreciated.
Thanks,

Keeping the system updated is important. It's not necessarily important,
though, to do it via automatic updates. Personally I don't use it. I go to
the windows update site occasionally through Internet Explorer | Tools |
Windows Update, and select the custom option. This displays what updates
are available. I read the info on each one to decide if I want it, then
they can be installed from windows update or the update file downloaded and
executed from the computer (this makes it possible to save the update file
first to CD for future use).

In any event most major security updates come out once a month on the second
Tuesday of the month, called patch Tuesday. Sometimes important updates
will come out on other than patch Tuesday so I check occasionally, maybe
once a week.

Sorry I don't know how to remedy your current problem.

Hi Gerard,
Adding To Rock, try to repair the Update engine it may damaged or coorrupt,
to do that follow these steps:
Open Run Command and type these commands in one-by-one:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 alt.dll
regsvr32 wuctui.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 inetcomm.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Please Note the space between regsvr32_and any DLL come after it.
Also Open the Services and see if the Update service is runing by typing in
the Run command: services.msc click [OK] and locate the service and select
to run it Automatically.
This this also to stop and restart the Update:
