Automatic update hang

When I try to run automatic update it downloads the updates (or so it seems)
then hangs before unstalling them. I have to use task manager to kill the
application to get out of it. I have used Mcafee Freescan to look for
viruses, I have updated my graphics driver and reinstalled my sound driver.
I did a repair install of XP Pro. I did a scandisk and defragmented the
drive but nothing makes a difference. I looked at task manager to see if any
process was hogging CPU cycles but the Idle task is the main consumer of
cycles. It would be nice to troubleshoot the ap and see what it is waiting
for. Any ideas?
