There is something seriously wrong with my computer. Sometimes when I'm using it and I'm executing a program, the computer shuts down by itself without the "Logging Off" or "Shutting Down" screen you should normally get. It just goes back straight to the Windows Boot up Screen. I have also found that whenever I try to install a program, it is unsuccessful or "corrupted". I have just restored the PC to its original factory settings prior to another problem I encountered. When I tried to log on, some error message telling me to terminate a program shows up and then after I did that the computer completely hanged and did not log on. I have scanned my computer and have found no viruses, worms or infections. Please help

Here is my PC Info

Brand: IBM NetVist
OS: Pre-installed Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack
Date of Purchase: May 200

What is your output for your power supply? Sometime I notices if your
power supply can't handle the demand, it will reboot the machine.

Let's start from something easy to check.

1) Check to see if there is anything losen inside the computer. (Happen all
the time)
2) Check to see if the On/Off switch is not jammed.
3) Scan for Spywares. (you'll never know.)
4) Check the screen saver setting. make sure it doesn't shut down your
computer in 5 minutes or so.
5) Check the BIOS setting to see if it puts your computer to sleep in a
short period of time.

I will add the possible of something overheating as well.

Hi, if it is any comfort I have the same problem, I will let you know if I find an answer. please let me know if you do. Mine occurs during heavy usage like playing a game or making a long copy or recording when it will just shut down after 15 to 30 mins , if I am just browsing about it will stay on all day

Hi Ally Further to my last message, I have solved my problem. I gave myself the clue when I told you that it only shut itself down when under heavy usage such as a game or installing copying etc. So, I checked the CPU temparature and found that it went up to an incredible 95 degrees C (almost boiling). A futher check revealed that the CPU fan was not working. I then looked inside, moved the wire that was jamming the fan and all is well. How the CPU is still working after reaching that temparature I will never know, I am a very lucky boy
Best of luck with yours
Leslie
