Automatic Reboot - 1073741819

I've just acquired a used IBM R31 laptop with pre-installed XP
Home/SP1. No disks came with it. Can't do anything because of an
automatic shutdown and reboot, about 2 minutes into operation - Status
Code 10173741819. Very consistent. I'm dead in the water.

A 'net search suggests a sassen worm, but the Microsoft checker for
that comes up clean.

The computer won't stay running long enough for me to download SP2 or
do a Windows Update. It tries, but the instant the shutdown screen
pops up, the update process is interrupted. That shutdown screen is
rigid 1 minute countdown, can't do anything, no option but to let it
run its course. Ugly, ugly, ugly...

Any suggestions?

type cmd and click OK. Then on the command line, type: shutdown -a

Try this to stop the automatic shutdown. You most likely are infected with
a variant of the blaster worm or sasser worm. What does your antivirus
application say about this problem?
 
I wish someone would unload a computer like that on me for a good price. So
many people dump them when this happens. I am just not in the right place at
the right time.

The magic command! Wonderful! Thank you. Made it possible
to run Norton Anti-Virus, Live-Update, Total Scan. - came up zero, no
virus found.

Then I was able to run Windows Update which brought in 15 security
Updates, reboot. Following reboot, the 1073741819 error
disappeared, making it possible to update with Service Pack 2, which
bloated the used space from 3.6 gigs to 6.5 gigs.

I then ran Registry First Aid which found 100 errors and fixed 88 of
them.

I then ran SpyBot which found only 7 parasites, and deleted them.

And finally, I ran TuneUp which found 69 more problems and fixed them.

This little system is now running just fine, well worth the effort
needed to clean it up. But it was only possible with your "shutdown
-a" tip, much appreciated. Yet another great example of the 'net
at its finest.
