Dave

I just recently encountered a problem with excel where I
start excel and a ton of files are opened automatically.
Not all the files are excel format, so it can't open all
of them, it just gives an error when it gets to one (a ppt
file or doc file, etc)

I don't know what is causing it and I removed/re-installed
excel 2000, shut down & re-started, did a full virus scan
with the most recent AV defs and am up to date with all
the windows patches.

HELP!!!!!

Dave,

Start Excel while holding down the SHIFT key. Then, go to the
Tools menu, choose Options then the General tab. There, ensure
that "Alternate Startup Directory" is empty. If it is not, Excel
will attempt to open all files in that folder.

Hi Dave

It sounds like you have set an alternative Startup folder in Excel
Tools=>Options=>General=>At startup, open all files in (thas the wording
in Excel 2002, I seem to recall it being Alternate Startup location in
earlier versions)

You need to remove this folder from the location above.

However, you need to get to a point where you can do this, and maybe Excel
is locking up by trying to open too many files.
If this is the case, temporarily rename the folder where the files are
loading from, open Excel, make the alteration, then you can rename your
folder back to the original name.

Hi Chip

I didn't realise that holding down SHIFT would circumvent the problem.
That's a whole heap easier than my suggestion to the OP.

Unfortunately the SHIFT method didn't work, but I did
remember which dir was set to the alternate startup, so I
temp renamed it so I could reset the option

Thanks everyone for the help!
