Hello Michael

Trying to number rows in a table with numbers of the format

2.1.1 row1
2.1.2 row2
2.1.3 row3

I can already number rows with 1,2,3,4...

There are various ways to get there.

A simple one: type "2.1." and then add a SEQ field (look it up in Word's
offline help). Save the whole thing so far as an AutoText and insert it
on every line.

What are you using the Heading 3 style for in that document?

If you are not using it for anything else, setting the table cells into
Heading 3 style and then setting Outline Numbering ON for the Heading series
of styles will get you what you want.

You need a Heading 1 and a Heading 2 paragraph above them to populate the
numbering, but you can hide that (Set its text to Hidden) if you are not
using numbering in your headings.
