Every time I connect to the internet a microsoft icon
appears in the tray in the lower right and tells me it is
downloading something. I can pause it, but not get rid of
it. What is this?

Anne,

Go to System Properties in Control Panel and look at the tab called
Automatic Updates.
Before you change anything understand the implications of your actions in
that you will have to manually go and get the latest security patches and
critical updates if you disable this service.

Just as Mike pointed out.....One additional comment I would like to make. If
you are using modem to connect to internet then the download speed is fairly
slow. Some of these updates can be in megabytes that can take long time to
upload. The Windows is smart enough to let you disconnect and next time you
reconnect it just continues downloading from last place where you
disconnected. So it may take few sessions to complete the download. Once it
is finished it will then notify you. You can get an idea how far it is by
hovering your mouse over the icon in your tray. It will give you a
percentage of the completed download.
