I really don't know if this is the appropriate group for
my problem and I've never been in a newsgroup but
hopefully one of you with your knowledge can help a
computer challenged person.

I've been getting automatic downloads ever since I got my
computer (Gateway) a year and a half ago. I have Windows
XP. There was no problem with these until recently.
Recently when I download the update when my computer comes
back on all my icons on my desktop are smaller than
before. The same goes for the toolbar at the top. I
tried going into Control Panel to change them back to the
normal size but it shows that they are still the normal
size. My only recourse has been to do a system restore to
a time before the download. Then everything is fine. I
don't, however, feel that this is a good thing to do all
the time. And I don't know if the new downloaded
information stays in my computer after the restore.

Do any of you have any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

To be truthful, only a few things change the appearance of the icons. They
still take up the same number of dots when your screen resolution changes,
and this I feel is what happened to you, from your description.

Try this..

Right click on the desktop - anywhere that there are no icons and no bar..
Choose "Properties". This will bring up the "Display Properties" window.
Across the top, find and click on the "Settings" tab. Somewhere near the
center of this window, find the "Screen resolution" bar. Take note of the
numbers underneath, that is your current resolution. You can click on that
(to the left of the "marker" to decrease the resolution, to the right of the
"marker" to increase the resolution or click and hold on the marker to drag
it where you want it..) and change the screen resolution.

Change the resolution one or two steps to the right.. Making the numbers
below grow. Essentially you are increasing the number of dots that make up
your screen. The number on the left is horizontal, or number of dots on one
line from left to right on your screen. The number on the right is
vertical, or number of dots on one line from top to bottom. If you multiply
those together, you get the number of dots on the screen total (think of
geometry/algebra and area calculations.)

Essentially, what likely happened is that something installed (new video
drive - but that would be weird) OR more likely, someone played with a
setting and did not put it back. Click an move the "marker" once to the
right from where it was. Then click on "apply".. See how the icons and bar
look like they got smaller? They are still the same number of dots, but
since more dots fit on the screen now, it LOOKS smaller. You can move the
"marker" back to the original setting and click on apply if you want, now...
That will get you back to normal.
