automatic dates

I have always had my letterhead set up to automatically insert the date and
page numbers. Today when I open letters (old and new), instead of the date,
I find {date'@"mmnnd,yyyy"} and {page}. Have I hit something strange?
 
Click ALT+F9 to toggle the display.
