Automatic data updates

I searched the posts and didn't find anything that matched what I am trying
to do so here goes:

I have a deck of about 160 slides with each having a common header and a
body that has common data elements.

In the header there are two pieces of information; an ID number and a Global
ID number. Both of these numbers are stored in an Excel spreadsheet.

I want to automatically populate the Global ID number by doing a lookup on
the ID number from the PP header and then finding the corresponding Global ID
number in the Excell Spreadsheet.

In the body of the PP slide there is a table that has several data elements.
I would like to update these data elements by using the ID number in the
header to do a lookup in the Excel spreadsheet to find the row and the cells
that have the data.

I only need to update the data when I open the PP presentation - it doesn't
need to be able to update during a slide show.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Thanks David I will give this a try. The only problem I see is that there
are about 40 people who need this functionality and getting this tool for
them is extremely difficult at best and nearly impossible as the most likely
outcome. This tool is being used at one of the Big 3 auto companies so red
tape is the order of the day.

I can solve that problem for you. Merge won't do what you want. Not that I'm
knocking it. That would put me in the unlovely position of getting into
fistfights with myself. I wrote it. ;-)

There's no way PowerPoint itself will do what you're asking on its own, so some
kind of add-in will be needed. I could probably do a customized version of
Merge that solves the problem or one of the other folks here could do something
similar, but if the ultimate client won't permit software installations, then
they're stuck doing it manually, I'm afraid.
