Autoformat

I hope someone can help.

Here is the problem when there are two paragraphs with a
single paragraph return between them and autoformat is
applied the paragraph return between the paragraphs is
removed.

Is this normal behaviour or is there a way to turn it off.

I don't think it is possible to do so. Word is correcting your bad layout.
There is no reason to insert a blank paragraph between paragraphs.
Inter-paragraph spacing should be set by paragraph spacing and not by
pressing the enter key twice! Apply a paragraph style with spacing applied
and the gap will reappear.

If you're talking about removing empty paragraphs, then, yes, this is normal
behavior.
