Autoformat rules

Can someone refer to to where the criteria autoformat uses to apply distinguish the levels of headings to apply formatting?

My problem is this: I would like to use an outliner that outputs only plain text, paste it in Word 2003, and (if possible) have Word apply the appropriate formatting automatically. The only feature available is degree of indentation. So, is it possible to structure the indents so that when I call up autoformat, it will decide the headings are to be treated as headings at the appropriate level.

G'day srdiamond <[email protected]>,

If you use the Outline view you have some promote / demote tools to
help with this sort of structuring.

Both the AutoFormat and "AutoFormat As You Type" criteria for Heading
styles go against all proper formatting methods. They require you to
use empty paragraphs for spacing. BUT if you use AutoFormat the empty
paragraphs are removed after the Heading styles are applied.

You need an empty paragraph before and after the heading paragraph and
the outline level is associated with the indent. For example a .5"
left indent will be Heading 2, 1" Heading 3, etc.

If this will not work then you might try using Find/Replace and find
paragraphs with a specific indent and replace it with the appropriate
Heading (Click "More" use the Formats menu in Find/Replace). If this
works then you could record the Find/Replace steps in a macro to
automate the task.

Otherwise as Steve suggested you can use Outline view to manually
apply the styles in the document.
