Hi Group,

We have a small network of 4 XP workstations connected to a DSL connection
trough a Linksys router with DHCP enabled . Setup worked fine for a couple
of days, internet access worked fine, file and printer sharking worked fine
too. Saturday one of the workstations started having problems, no internet
access, couldn't access printer shared from other workstation. Today another
workstation has the same problems. From what I checked, the only odd thing
is when I run 'ipconfig' from the command prompt. what I see different is
under the IP address it mentions 'autoconfigured' and gives an IP diffrente
from what the router assaigns by default. Any idea what could be causing
this?

Thanks,
Marco

What do you mean the IP is different than what the router assigns by
default? is it on a different subnet?

Check the status/logs on the router to see what DHCP leases it has
active, and the DHCP lease time set on the router. It may be running out
of leases to give out. If you only have a few machines you should be
able to set the lease time fairly long (a few days at least).

Also, try unplugging the cable from a client machine until it notices
that the network is disconnected, and then reconnect the cable. It
should then renegotiate with the DHCP server.

It sounds like the clients are failing to renew their DHCP lease, and so
are falling back to an autoconfigured IP number (which is not routable).

Are these machines and the router always on, or do they get turned off at
night?
