I have set Outlook to archive messages older than 30
days, but messages older than this remain unarchived.
What is the reason for this?

Note that AutoArchive only runs after a certain amount of days you set in
Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button AutoArchive. Also check the individual
folder settings for AutoArchive by rightclicking the folder-> properties->
tab AutoArchive. You can fire AutoArchive manually by File-> Archive...

Thank you for your reply. I have set AutoArchive to
archive files older than 30 days. When I run AutoArchive
manually, this should mean, I would have thought, that
files older than 14 January should get archived. Looking
at my archived files, however, I see that although files
back to 29 Dec have been moved, earlier files dating from
November haven't been touched. I am thoroughly confused.
What is going on?

Check the Modified date on the items that aren't being archived as you think
they should. That's the date Outlook uses to determine whether or not an
item is ready to be AutoArchived, and a simple action such as moving the
item to another folder can change the Modified date. More information and a
list of actions that change the Modified date can be found here:
