auto zip

Is there a way to have a file automaticlly get zipped? I have a file that
I need to automate that gets zipped, then ftp'd.
The ftp part is easy, but what about the zipping, or some other type of
compression?
The original file size is 800 megs. after it's zipped, it's around 200
megs.

There are command line versions of Winzip and Winrar.
