auto updates

How do I know which updates are save to install?
Last update I installed crashed my machine and cost me$$
at the computer repair to get it back up.
I'm now gun shy so any suggestions?

Somebody always has problems with any patch. At this time with the heavy
traffic on windows update, I'd be gun shy too. I'd advise you to got to
windows update, write down all the critical updates that are listed, then
got to the windows update catalog and download the patches to your
harddrive, and manually install the patches. Make sure you create a restore
point, before beginning the manual patching, and I'd disconnect from the
internet, and then turn off my AV too!

And that's going pretty slow too, another way to get updates is by getting
them to thru MS's Security Bulletins

Find the ones that are on your list from windows update.
