Auto Updates and Account Type - virus attached

I have been the vitim of a virus caught through MSN Messenger.

So far I have only been able to regain internet access but still unable to
regain Auto Updates and User Account Adminstrator rights.

When I try to access the Windows Update Web site, I receive the following
error message: "Access Denied Network policy settings prevent you from using
Windows Update to download
and install updates on your computer"

Also, when try to regain Administrator rights the Automatic Updates tab does
not appear in System Properties.


I have try to search and understand MSN support online but to no effect.

I am running Windows XP Home addition.

Can anyone save my sanity ???
 
For the benefit of all users, please state the Name of the Virus and how you
managed to:
a. detect the virus
b. delete the virus
 
All I suspect from reading articles is that the virus was caught through
opening a file within MSN Messenger.

I would not say I have deleted the virus yet inspite of having run new virus
detect and destroy software.

I have also managed to download the new 7.0 version of messenger
