auto restart after shutdown - problem

after a virus attack (protoride variant) whenever I
shutdown xp it restarts automatically. Removal of the
virus required manual changes to the registry entries.I
feel that the shutdown button properties have been changed
by the virus to the restart button properties. I do not
know how to check this out and would appreciate some
guidance.

If you think there is another reason for the problem then
pls tell me.

This is happening on 2 laptops and 1 desktop (so far)
