Auto Number doesn't work

I'm using "Outline Numbered" (customized, using TOC styles) in Word 2000 SP3.

After I apply the outline to the very first item I type (which works correctly), then hit return, the cursor just goes to the left edge.

It does not auto-number (or apply the style) !

Have tried a number of things (i.e. tried using heading styles, started with #1, tried starting with #2) but can't get it to work (losing hours off a deadline).

Any help...greatly appreciated...TIA.

Make sure that the options related to WordPerfect on the
General tab of Tools>Options is not selected. However, a
better approach to numbering in Word is to apply paragraph
styles, which are attached to (levels of) a numbering
scheme. For details, see:

Also, check the formatting of the TOC style you are using
to see what style is set for the following paragraph.

The "Style for following paragraph" for all of Word's built-in Heading
styles is Normal. This is by design, since ordinarily you would want to
follow a heading with a Normal or Body Text paragraph. If you are trying to
build an outline using only heading styles, I believe that working in
Outline view (with only heading levels displayed) will get around this, but
in this case, if you are not going to add any paragraph text after the
headings, you need to change the following style (Format | Style | Modify).
While you're modifying the style, select Format | Paragraph | Line and Page
Breaks and disable the "Keep with next" formatting (which is enabled by
default in all heading styles); otherwise all your paragraphs will try to
clump together and you may end up with "infinite repagination" as they chase
one another.

I'm assuming in all of this that you have actually used Heading 1, Heading
2, etc. If you have really used the TOC 1, TOC 2, etc., styles, note that
these are not intended for outline purposes; they are used by a TOC field to
pick up headings with an outline level of 1, 2, etc., and create a table of
contents.

Suzanne....yes, using headings....TOC was more of a "try anything"
Appreciate the note on disabling "keep w/next".....Thank You !
