Auto-expanding folders

I've just switched to Outlook 2003 from another mail client. The biggest
thing I miss is the ability to set the auto-expansion timing of folders
during a mail message drag and drop operation. I looked through all online
help and also searched online for a way to change this timeout, but haven't
found anything.

Is there a mechanism to adjust this parameter? (how long to wait before the
auto-expansion of the folder occurs...)

Thanks...

I've never noticed any autoexpansion feature in Outlook. My folders stay
expanded if I've expanded them or contracted if that's the way I left them
last. This is true of both my Exchange folders and my PST folders. It is
not true of either my Hotmail folders or my IMAP folders. Those never stay
expanded.

Hi Brian,

Sorry. I should have been more precise. I have a set of heirarchal IMAP
folders, i.e.

Saved Mail
--- Product Questions
--- ToDo List
OEMS
--- AtoH
--- A_OEM
--- B_OEM
--- C_OEM
--- ItoM
--- J_OEM
--- L_OEM
--- NtoZ

When I drag a mail message into the OEMS folder, it auto-opens and displays
the folders underneath it. I can then drag the mail message onto the ItoM
folder and it auto-opens and I can finally place the message into the J_OEM
folder. The folders do not close automatically, as you pointed out.

There are two things that I would ideally like to see:

1) When I place a dragged message over the IMAP folder it will open, but
will take about one second. I'd like to be able to have that folder open
more quickly.

2) I'd really love to see try auto-expand/auto-collapsing folders, but it
appears that that doesn't exist in Outlook 2003.

Thanks...

Rich

That's controlled by the network bandwidth and the IMAP server. Outlook can
report only what the IMAP server tells it. The delay you see is Outlook
waiting for the IMAP server to report what folders it contains.

I am using outlook in offline mode and the feature that Rich is talking
about is valid also for the PST files, therefore the bandwith or the
server response time is not a factor. However Rich I do not know the
answer. If you find a way to reduce such time please post it because I
am also looking at it.
