auto disconnect not working

I recently helped a friend set up her new computer with XP. I chose the
option under advanced dial up for computer to disconnect when connection no
longer needed. This works fine for me in Win 98 in that when I close down
IE, message comes up asking me if I want to disconnect. But does not seem
to work in XP. Why not?
