Auto complete not working

When filling in addresses, before I had finished typing a word or a
title I had used before, say in an application, I used to see the word
before I had completed it. All I had to do then was stop typing and
simply click on the complete sentence presented to me and hey presto, it
inserted itself in the box.
Unfortunately now I still see the word before I have finished typing it
but when I click on the complete word or address, it does not "paste"
itself in the box, most tiresome and annoying. How do I fix this please
to get back what I had before.

Many thanks, tried it but it is still "slow" pasting in the words that
appear, in fact sometimes it does not happen, as in when you are asking
Google something which you have already asked before so you type in the
same word. That word appears but when I try to enter it without having
to complete my typing it does not always paste in, curious!
