profecianal package and my friend was to install everything again. she was to
install the one i gave her but now i don't think she did because when i went
to windows updates, i have this big thing that tells me that my windows xp is
not original
how do i go about it

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to install Windows XP
Professional on a Dell that origianally came with XP Home and have problems
with Authentication.

First of all, Dell uses a special version of Windows XP, modified for use on
their laptops. In my opinion, I highly recommend that you DO NOT install a
different version of the Operating system other than what the OEM
Manufacturer has given you. This specially modified version of windows
includes specialized drivers specific to your machine, and will save you a
lot of headache when trying to find drivers etc.

If you still want to go with installing XP Pro on your Dell, you will have
to first Activate Windows. without activation, any Microsoft software will
prompt you to activate prior to installing. If your version of Windows is
Genuine and Authentic, Activating shouldn't be a problem provided the CD key
has never been activated before.

Secondly, after activation you should be prompted on Windows Update to
install the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Tool. This allows microsoft to
verify that your copy of windows is truly legit, and will allow you access
to hardware driver updates and optional software updates from Windows
Update.

If your copy of XP is NOT legit, or genuine, then you are SOL and the only
way you can get your updates is through rigorous searching for cracks on the
internet.

Good Luck.

Not entirely true. True for automatic updates but not for
doing manual downloading and installation of updates from
Microsoft. Just needs another machine with any version of
a Windows operating system that passes WGA check and gets
a validation number. Moreover, it is sometimes better to
verify what Microsoft intends to update on the computer and
not let it be controlled robotically.
