Audio drivers in XP

I have Windows XP. I just purchased new headphones to use
on my Language learning software. I cannot get sound out
of the headphones. I check the setup, control panel,
sound, make sure the selection is headphones.Try to test
the hardware and it says that it cannot test the hardware.

Appreciate any help in resolvong this issue.

Just an idea: run SNDVOL32.EXE and in the Options menu enable all
controls to make sure that the corresponding channel is not muted.
