Hi-

I just installed XP Pro over XP Home (doing a clean install and wiping the
HD first though) and now I see that I have no sound. In device manager it
shows Multimedia Audio Controller with no drivers. I tried inserting my
Windows CD and trying to dectect drivers as well as windowsupdates but no
luck. I have no idea why I would not have sound after this upgrade. I have
Dell Dimension 4500 with a built in sound card. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks!

Visit http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
and type in your Dell Service Tag Number and you'll be able to download the correct
audio drivers designed for your Dell computer.

Thanks - that did it. I feel dumb now, didn't realize Dell offered that.
Thanks again.

Mistake was the clean install of XP Pro over Home. Should have tried
the upgrade route first - and then if that didn't work right, clean
install.

What has happened is your Dell uses proprietary drivers for the built
in sound card and you deleted those drivers with the clean install.
You need to go to the Dell downloads area of their support web site
and download all the drivers you need for your Dell: Sound, video,
power saver, etc.

What other drivers are proprietary other than sound? I thought video should
be ok (well, then again I thought sound should be too). What does power
saver do for me? Is there a list anywhere I can find what drivers I need?
Thanks for your help!

Will they list all the drivers or just the ones that XP doesn't provide?
Sorry for the basic questions.

Basic answer:

Go to Dell.com and click on Support.
Plug in your Service Tag.
Go to the page listing all the drivers.
Download and install the ones you want.

Don't worry about what XP does or doesn't have built in. Drivers from
the device and/or OEM are what you want anyway.

Malke's response has it covered for you. You're making it too
complicated by over analyzing without checking it out first...lol...
