I have always wondered where are the attachments are
stored? Example: I open a word attachment to an email in
my inbox. Where does outlook open this file from? If i
go to the location of the file in explorer will I be able
to open it by double clicking it? any info for this
newbie is much appreciated.

Attachments are stored in the .PST file. When you open one from a mail
message, it is stored in a temporary folder. If you don't save the
attachment somewhere else, the temporary copy *should* be deleted when you
close the e-mail message (though I don't know if this actually happens every
time in reality). In other words, attachments are only stored outside the
..PST file temporarily when you open them from the mail message -- you'd have
to manually save them elsewhere to get a "permanent" copy outside the .PST.
