Attachments Sent Cannot be Read - .dat files

I have outlook, and many people reply that they cannot
read my attachments because they are not a .doc file.
What do I need to do?
 
Send your messages to these people in HTML or Plain-Text format (Tools |
Options | Mail Format).

You may also want to check out your options folder,
advanced tab, and make sure you don't have it set to break
apart messages into packets.
