Whenever I try to open an attachment, it comes out all scrambled with random
letters and symbols.

Have you tried sending yourself an attachment, and if so, does that work?
What is the file type of the attachment, DOC, TXT, PDF, etc.?

What file type is that attachment ? The 3 letters after the dot ( . ) is
the file type, i.e. .pps, .doc etc.

I sent myself a .wps attachment and it worked. I can read some .pdf and .txt
files, but not .doc or .docx. I have tried saving them as a different file
type and that did not work. The last .pdf I tried to open gave me a "set
associations" message.

The attachments are from everybody. I think I can read .txt .pdf and .wps
files but not .doc or .docx. I successfully sent myself a .wps attachment.

OK, fine. So you don't have an "in general" problem with handling
attachments.

It's just a missing tool for viewing DIC/DOCX files.*Works* can *not*
work with type of file.
You'd either need MS Word or the free "Word Viewer":

The last .pdf I tried to open gave me a "set associations" message.

Do you have a PDF Reader installed?
On case you don't have Adobe Reader 9.1 download and install it:
http://www.adobe.com/

Should the Adobe Reader already be installed and still an error message
in the "file association" appear, run Repair from the Reader's
Help-menu.
