What is the extension (the part after the dot) of the attachment.

The file was probably created using Microsoft Word, and you need Microsoft Word or the free Word Viewer 2003/2007 to open the .DOC file. Otherwise, it will be displayed as junk characters in Notepad/Wordpad. IIRC, Wordpad can handle Word 6.0 documents (.doc) only.

Frank; it's .doc and opens in word pad

You say you downloaded it, but did you install it?

Run the Default Programs applet and assign the .DOC extension to Word Viewer.

Sorry, it is hard to guess how detailed an explanation needs to be.

You will need to run the Default Programs tool, which you can get to
either from the Start menu (right pane, under "Control Panel"), or by
going to Control Panel and finding it there. Then click on "Set your
default programs." Wait for the list of programs to appear, then click
on Word Viewer. Click on "Set this program as default."

Thanks Gary.... Did this last evening and couldn't find it........ Have just
gone through your step by step guide (thanks ever so!) and word viewer is
definately not there...does this indicate that the download/installation
wasn't successful?
You're a gem ~ thanks for your patience !

Try this: Navigate to any .DOC file and right-click on it. You should
get a list of possible actions which includes "Open With..."
If "Open With..." is not presented as an option, try right-clicking while
holding down Shift. Select "Open With...", then if Word Viewer is not
offered as one of the recommended programs, use the Browse button
to navigate to the Word Viewer .exe file. (I don't have it, so I can't tell
you the exact name of the .exe file.) Make sure to also select the option
to "Always use the selected program...". Click OK. That should do it.

After you downloaded the Viewer installation file, you should have
selected Run, which installs the program. It should then have installed
itself in a folder under C:\Program Files. Also, there should be a
shortcut under All Programs. If you see the shortcut, right-click on it,
and it will show you the location of the "Target", i.e., the executable
program file.
