When my husband, using Word as his editor, sends email from an Exchange
server to a pop recepient his emails show 3 image attachments - when opened
these attachments are small boxes or dots. He didn't attach anything. He
has tried removing normal.dot but this didn't work.

Any ideas?
 
Is one of the attachments called winmail.dat? If so, here's what MS says about
this:
