Recently my Vista Home Premium's Windows Mail developed a(nother) new
problem. When I click on an attachment, it does not open. My left click is
ignored. I keep current with upgrades.

This laptop has always had a screwy copy of windows. I'm looking forward to
Windows 7. I hope it has drivers for my 2+ year old Acer Aspire 5610. But
I'll lose about 20% of my apps, because I either don't have the CD's
anymore, or I downloaded the app.

Have you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Is "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Vista (KB969897)"
listed in Installed Updates?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

NB: Uninstalling IE8 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) should
resolve the behavior but you should not have encountered it in the first
place if IE8 was installed properly.

I use Avast and Ad Aware on all my computers, and friends and relatives
also - just Vista's firewall. Never McAfee or Norton expensive hogs. I do
all Windows and Microsoft updates. And, yes, it started about the time -
recently - that I allowed IE8 on my laptop. I'd rather uninstall IE8. I've
done other things since then that I don't want to lose. I've also recently
install Magicjack.

Did you disable Avast and Ad-Aware Ad-Watch before you installed IE8, Paul?

Repost (please answer):

Note that there is nothing from Microsoft stating a relevant problem with
Avast or Ad Aware. Some people theorize there is a problem but Microsoft
sure does not state any requirement to disable them. So don't be afraid to
admit that you did not disable them.

As Gary already said, that's a known problem which affects many (though
not all) systems after installing IE8.
After all we got to know meanwhile AntiVirus software is not part if the
game. The letter is just PA bear's wild theories :-( :-(

The only fix known so far is to uninstall IE8.
An alternative would be reduce the problem to JPG and TXT files (all
other files types opening fine) with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties.
In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%.
Click OK.
Restart Windows Mail and try opening attachments.

Having to disable my antivirus while I install something on-line is
unacceptable!

Did you disable Avast and Ad-Aware Ad-Watch before you installed IE8, Paul?

Repost (please answer):

I tend to agree. If the antivirus really is a problem, Microsoft needs
to work around it automatically without requiring the user to jump
through convoluted hoops.

You don't have to install IE8 online.
