At Startup log on screen "116 unread messages"

When I start my computer and reach the log in screen, I am told I have
"x" number of unread messages. This must mean that Messenger is
loading and accessing my passport account. I do not use my hotmail
account for e-mail, just as a passport because so many MS services
require you to have one. I don't like that everytime I am logged in I
am told how many e-mail messages I have. How do I prevent this from
happening? ALSO...

when trying to fix this situation, I accidentally removed the "MSN
plugin" by clicking the "change/remove" button in the "add/remove
programs" window. Will this have adverse affects?

Greetings,

Actually this number is set from the last time you logged into Messenger, it's just a
registry key. However, if you want to remove it, download the TweakUI powertoy:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp (see on the right).

After you have TweakUI installed, click Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, and
choose TweakUI for Windows XP. In the TweakUI window, on the left, click the '+' next to
Logon, and choose Unread Mail. Uncheck 'Show unread mail on Welcome screen' and click OK.

Remove the MSN Add-in will have no adverse effects, however if you want to access your
Hotmail account from within Windows Messenger 4.x, you'll need to reinstall it from here:
